Celebrate Living Black History in the Gullah/Geechee Nation!

In the Gullah/Geechee Nation, we celebrate and create Black history every day of the year. We continue to honor the legacy of Dr. Carter G. Woodson by specifically hosting events where Black people can safely come together to honor our ancestors and have intellectual dialogues about continuing to thrive as a race of people. We pay homage to our native Gullah/Geechee ancestors through ceremonies and activities that support the economic empowerment and land ownership of Gullah/Geechee citizens. We welcome the entire African Diaspora to come out and join us in doing so at these events that will be held during February 2024.

Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation will launch the month Celebrating Gullah/Geechee Legacy & Literacy” at the South Carolina Library in Columbia, SC on February 1st at 5:30 pm. The traveling exhibition, “Gullah/Geechee SEA & ME” will be on display and Queen Quet will present from her Gullah/Geechee history books and novels followed by a booksigning and interactive dialogue. Admission is FREE and all are welcome to attend. Please RSVP at EventBrite via this link:

Queen Quet will be joined by Dr. Amir Toure, Town Councilwoman Bridgette Frazier, Elder Carlie Towne and other native Gullah/Geechees at the Gullah/Geechee Land & Legacy Black Family Gathering on St. Helena Island at the historic Brick Baptist Church on Saturday, February 3rd at Noon. This Gullah/Geechee luncheon and circle of dialogue will focus on “From St. Helena to Sapelo” and the continuation of Black land ownership. Attendees will also tour the Reconstruction Era National Historical Park sites. Gullah/Geechee art, crafts and books will be on sale. The funds from this event will support the “Gullah/Geechee Land & Legacy Fund.” Get your tickets today.

The Black Family Gathering will be followed by the “2nd Annual 2 Savannah-Chatham Gullah/Geechee African Ball” in Savannah, GA hosted by “2 Chefs Gullah/Geechee Restaurant.” Tickets are on sale now:

Queen Quet will head south to Amelia Island to celebrate the anniversary of Franklintown on historic American Beach on February 21st at 6 pm at the “American Beach Community Center.” Register to join her by using the QR below or go to this link:

The month will be concluded with De Gullah Black History Experience” Saturday, February 24th at Noon at the Pure Theater in Charleston, SC. 

Jayn Queen Quet, Chieftess of De Gullah/Geechee Nation, Gullah/Geechee Artist, Quadre’ Stuckey and De Gullah/Geechee Famlee een Chucktown as De Gullah/Geechee Family Foundation presents De 3rd Annual Gullah/Geechee Black History Month Experience.

We will have Authentic Gullah/Geechee performances by Deninufay Dance Company, Gullah Spiritual Singing by Lorraine Singleton, Spoken word Elder Towne, Music Performance by Jordan Tillar, Gullah/Geechee Arts, Crafts, Books, Gullah Sweetgrass Baskets, Naturally Geechee products, and more.
